Motion What?!

We are Motion Graphic Designers.

Motion Graphics is considered a new field in the creative industry. Some say it started in the early 60s, while others haven’t got a clue what it is. Although its pretty self explanatory, Im often hit with the question “so, what does a motion graphic designer do?”. Unknowing to the person asking, they experience motion graphics in their everyday lives through advertisement, gaming, film, social media and TV.

This project has a goal to clear up the confusion surrounding the term ‘Motion Graphics’ and sets out to build the foundations of a solid industry.

Motion what? Motion Graphics.

I came across this great looking graphical story. I loved the simplicity of the design and the colour pallete that was used.

The scenes that changed in speed are impressively animated. An interesting topic with social media becoming a habitual action in many peoples daily lives.

A different type of explainer video. I like that it is live action and follows a narrator, giving the video a bit of personality.

Showcases what it is explaining in the sequence. Explains, and then demonstrates it.

Stunning to look at.

Not too long and not too short. Those with an interest in the subject (such as myself) are left wanting more.

The final reveal is a superb twist that provides examples of the possibilities with compositing. All the movies, and boxsets we watch – what is real and what is not?

PG05: Final Major Project Brief

Exhibition, Public Display of Major Project and Presentation of final project outcomes and Practice-based Dissertation

The Major Project represents the culmination of the student’s investigation and the final stage of the research strategy. This is a substantial piece of work which embodies the integration of theory and practice, is underpinned by advanced practice-based methodologies and processes and is informed by the student’s ongoing reflective analysis and personal learning in the form of Practice-based Dissertation and the Showcase of their practice in public domain.

The end of the Concept and Prototyping unit marked the drawing together of the ongoing, integrated strands of the research strategy: research, analysis, technology, business model, design, modelling, and prototyping. The result was the formulation of a project proposal (i.e. the Research Proposal). The Research Manifesto, and the Practice-based Essay developed within the Research Processes unit will also feed into the Major Project outcomes.

The Major Project is a development of a substation body of practice for a particular research inquiry that represents rigorous thinking and advanced skills. Taking further inquiries form Concept & Prototyping and Research Processes units student will work through continuous reflection between theory and practice to create a final major body of practice. Students are asked to present their work-in-progress prototype and practice week 4/5 within a presentation session. All students contribute to development of the final postgraduate showcase and with staff lead a consistent show is curated with an overarching theme.

In this unit students learn to:

  • Ascertain appropriate modes of testing for particular domains of enquiry/experimentation;
  • Explore and use modes of testing in the process of reviewing/evaluating research methods, the research strategy, use of methodologies, use of models and prototyping, appropriateness of technologies;
  • Acquire a strategic overview of their project in order to manage aims, time and other resources effectively; Analyse the notion of what is ‘meaningful’ with reference to their presentation and communication of the Major Project outcomes;
  • Assert their confidence in the intellectual processes, methodologies and strategies that they perceive to be integral to their Major Project and communicate them with authority (ownership of the project);
  • Evaluate the forms and formats of project and Practice- based Dissertation realisation appropriate to MA/MSc level, with regard to traceable evidencing of sources, intellectual property rights, ethical purpose and other issues of ownership and collaboration;
  • Reflect on the intellectual rigour defined by study at MA/ MSc level and debate the possibilities of taking forward their research beyond that level.

At the end of this unit students will be assessed on:

  • Ability to contextualise the project in relation to current debate and literature from professional and academical sources,
  • The technical sophistication and elegance of the project or portfolio,
  • The viability and complexity of the concept;
  • Ability to test and critically evaluate a range of technologies and articulate critiques of them.
  • Ability to test and evaluate critically a range of methodologies and articulate critiques of them;
  • Ability to critically reflect on the process and to analyse the findings;
  • Ability to showcase work in public settings;
  • Ability to contribute to the collaborative showcase development with best skills and ability;
  • The academic rigour applied in the research strategy;
  • The structure, coherence and thoroughness of the academic arguement.

Assesable Elements:

  • Practical work to be submitted to moodle. High resolution video/ video documentation and/ or website.
  • Demo Exhibition (28th June) and final work presentation and exhbition (14th-24th September)
